🎵Christmas is over,
Save some Christmas cheer
Christmas time holds so many memories and expectations--the deep significance of the sacred celebrations, the foolish sentiments of the secular songs and Hallmark cards, all impacting our own hopes to have the best Christmas ever (or just to survive without getting sick or depressed!) ... with thoughts of Christmases Past and Future, feelings both sweet and sad, all mixed together in a "punch" of emotions that can be a little overwhelming.
🎵Will it be merry? Will it be bright?
When Christmas is over...
Will we still be merry?
Will we still be MARRIED?
Will we still be BRIGHT?
Will we all still be here on earth when we all get together again?
The large family Christmas gatherings in Chicago have ended.
The grandparents are long gone.
The annual parties at Aunt V. are a distant memory.
There is always a hint of darkness amidst all the merriment...
the darkness of the star-lit stable where the miracle (of God become man to save us all) took place...
the darkness of the short winter days...
the darkness in our lives.
But there is also light!...
in the joyous message of the bright angels in the sky, singing to the shepherds...
in the brights lights of the Christmas tree and the lighted Christ candle...
in the bright hope we have of experiencing the true spirit of Christmas more fully this year...
THE PROMISE OF ETERNAL SALVATION!...
the old familiar carols...
the Hallelujah Chorus!
All this, and us sitting amidst the piles of presents, the heaping platters of food, and the tons of tinsel (not really--not on my tree!)...
and amidst all the distractions of our busy lives...
and our dependence on (addiction to?) our smart phones and cable television.
🎵We all will be together...
until there is too much togetherness...
and then we all go our separate ways again, each to his/her own life and space and bed and (hopefully) more healthy food choices in the new year--and for some, work which calls them...
(except for those of us who are retired and heading to points south soon).
The good gifts we didn't know we needed that we could have afforded ourselves now need to find a space in our lives and closets--or be consumed before the resolutions kick in!
Yes, there was good food, fun gifts, hearty laughter, a new game, and for some--a valiant effort to be the best new karaoke star!
And then those two dogs ... (lol, cousins!) meeting for the first time, so happy to just run around and smell each other's uniquely scented parts!
We smile at the simplicity of their joy.
If only...

One more party before the end of the year...
AND IT WILL BE MERRY AND BRIGHT!!
